South Oakland lead 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh. With one out, BIG OIL DONT YOU LOVE THE SONG YMCA IT IS AWSOME I SAID YOUNG MAN SOMETHING I SAID YOUNG MAN SOMETHING BA BO BABA YMCAA
My daughter got ahold of my laptop there, I think I’ll just leave her work. An ode to the village people, mid-blog.
So then, with one out BIG OIL drew two walks, then hit a double down the line to tie the score, then after an intentional walk to load the bases, some guy hit a game winning walk-off to right center over a drawn in outfield.
Morgan drove in a run in the first and Moore had an RBI double for the Ducks. Zuzack pitched five strong innings and Musisko pitched a scoreless sixth.
The Oilers have a good lineup. If their pitching holds, they will be tough to beat.
If the Oilers take two of three from us this year, I’ll buy their manager a drink at
Despite this loss, we have a good team and we’re coming together quicker than last season. Chemistry is a tricky thing, especially in baseball since it is based so much on individual match-ups. I feel like we will rally after this tough loss. How we come out tomorrow will be telling.
South Oakland plays next tomorrow night, 9PM at Spring Hill vs. the Carrick Express. Strom and Sorosky are in charge.
South Oakland improved its record to 2-1, defeating the WOLFPACK (2-2) 9-6 in Spring Hill last night. Ducks starter, Chuck Zuzack (1-1) pitched four innings, scattering 9 hits, striking out 4. Catcher, Brandon Chartier went 3-for-3 with a walk, double and 2RBI and Andy Nichols went 2-for-2 with an RBI double and notched his first save of the season in relief.
The game was back and forth all night, with West View scoring two runs in the top of the first. The Ducks tied the game in the bottom of the second when Zuzack drove in Chartier with an RBI E6 and Sorosky scored on Nichols walk.
The WOLFPACK scored two more in the top of the third, and the Ducks answered with another two runs in the bottom of the third on Chartier’s RBI double. West View added one in the top of the fourth and the Ducks took the lead in the bottom half of the inning on two singles, an error and a walk.
The Ducks added one run in the fifth and two in the sixth. Musisko entered the game for Zuzack in the fifth and allowed one run in two innings of work, before Nichols recorded the save in the seventh.

I hope their second baseman’s leg is OK. He hurt it trying to make a sliding stop on a ball up the middle and it looked like his knee stuck and he had to be helped off the field. It’s terrible how much better shape the East End fields are in than Spring View. We need the gentrification to spread to Spring Hill and get some yuppie youth league playing there, and maybe that will change. We’ve been trying to find a better field for years, and haven’t been able to since the Oilers snagged Mellon out from under us in the great Ciccone defection of 2015.
This was a big win over a good team. We battled. Erasing 3 different West View leads before they ran out of arms. We also had a lot of good at bats and made them throw a lot of pitches. Last season we dropped a few winnable games early while management figured out where everyone fit, so far we’ve avoided that.
Next game is Tuesday, 6:45 at Hebrew Oilers in Shady Side.
South Oakland lost 9-4 to the Devils on Saturday. The game was 2-1 Devils in the third, then the Ducks relief pitching allowed 7 runs in two frames. The Ducks battled back to score three in the top of the seventh, but it was too little too late. The Ducks had the bases loaded for Tuomisto, trailing 2-0 in the 3rd, and he hit a deep line drive to left, but Huber made a nice catch for the Devils to end the threat. Huber later missed one while playing catcher that hit the ump in the balls.
Our best player was the kid we called up from single A. He went 2-for-3 stole 4 bases and scored twice. Ducks Pitcher Chuck Zuzak had a strong start, allowing 1 earned over 4 innings. Reliever Gary Musiko cleaned up the mess in the bottom of the sixth, striking out the last batter of the inning after allowing a single and a walk.
Overall not as bad a performance as the score might indicate.
The Ducks bounced back on Sunday to beat Cranberry 7-5 in Cranberry. South Oakland had RBI from DJ Dover and Jon Moore went 3-for-3. TJ Morgan went first to third on a single to right. Cranberry scored 3 in the bottom of the seventh to make it close.
The Ducks bullpen has been shaky, but when Andy Nichols and Brian Strom return from injury, it will help. If Moore and Sorosky can give us some innings we will be in great shape going forwards. Hard to say if we have no depth or great depth on the mound at this point. There’s a lot up in the air.
South Oakland will face the WOLFPACK Wed night at home. The schedule still says 8:30 so plan on that start time. However, there is a chance we will get pushed back by youth league.
Monday’s 5-4 win was big. Both teams played well, there weren’t many walks or errors. The game took like fifteen minutes. I can’t remember the last time the Ducks made a late-inning rally like this one.
***
For five innings the Bombers got key hits, and South Oakland left runners on base. We had a guy thrown out at home, left the bases loaded once and twice had two men on with less than two outs and couldn’t get a run in.
No one thought the Bombers had the balls to play in purple unitards and white tights.
The Bombers Pitcher located, and took advantage of the way-outside strike that ump likes to call. There’s no reason to throw it over the plate with that ump.
In the first inning, the Bombers scored on a two-out infield single followed by a double that died in the grass in shallow right.
Allegheny added another run in the third, and two more in the fifth on a couple hard hit balls combined with some defensive miscues.
It looked like the wheels might fall off, but Ciccone pulled it together and we stiffened up defensively.
The Ducks trailed 4-0 in the bottom of the sixth and started the inning with a leadoff double by Casale and three straight singles to make the score 4-2. After a walk, Iceberg singled to make the score 4-3.
The Bombers forced out a runner at the plate. Then with the bases loaded, Ben Hartranft hit a slow chopper to short, the Bombers forced a runner at second, but Hartranft beat the arrant throw to first. The first baseman missed the ball, and another run scored.
In the top of the seventh, Jason Fetter walked the first batter, then turned a double play on a line drive right at his head.
I’m not saying a couple guys on the Bombers don’t look like Ted Kaczynski
The game ended on a groundout.
Hartranft has 4 RBI in five games without getting a hit.
The Ducks have won three straight.
Pending Tornados, we play tonight at 6:15 in Etna vs. the Warriors.
The Senators jumped out to an early lead after Joseph McCarthy led off the game with a double, stole third, exploited America’s fear of communism, and scored on a fielder’s choice.
In the bottom of the first, after a single and two walks loaded the bases, Brandon Culp struck a blow for America and took Jesse Helms deep.
The Ducks scored another run in the inning on Bob Faust’s fielder’s choice.
5-1 Ducks after 1.
The Senators kept the game close for an inning, when they added two runs in the second off an error on a potential double play ball hit by Rick Santorum.
Santorum supports the above slogan.
The score remained 5-3 until the bottom of the third when South Oakland blew it open.
Iceberg doubled off the wall to start the inning, Dover singled the Ducks’ catcher to third then Faust walked, and Sorosky singled in a run to put the Ducks up 6-3. Gwin walked to load the bases with 2 outs for Ciccone who hit the Ducks’ second grand slam of the game and chased starting pitcher Ted Kennedy.
10-3 Ducks after 3.
Riley made a diving catch in right in the fourth, then got lost on his way to center field in the fifth. Dorsek played an inning without his hat for some reason then pinch ran. Fetter threw a six-pitch inning in relief.
Alexander Daigle made an appearance. The Senators scored two more to make it 10-5 after 5.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Ducks added three insurance runs on a double, two singles, an error, and a sac fly.
Ciccone retired the side in the seventh to end the game.
There was pizza and beer.
Misc:
Lost in all the grand slamming was a solid outing by TC, and a pretty clean game by our starting defense.
Our smaller home field may have helped with one of the home runs, but it also kept a few really hard hit balls in the gap to singles. It’s also not very easy to see at the plate.
The strike zone has been really wide all year.
Swetz only hits with runners on base. Our three through seven hitters had the following stats:
Ciccone: 2 for 3, BB, HR, 2B, 4 RBI
Culp: 2 for 4, HR, 2SB, 5 RBI
Swetz: 0 for 4, RE, R, 0 LOB
Galvanek: 3 for 4, 2B, SB, RBI
Dover: 3 for 3, 2B, SF, RBI
If our two hitter would get on base more, we’d be in even better shape.
In a battle of formidable foes, two of the premier pitchers in the NABA faced off at Joe Graff a.k.a. Volunteer Field. I have been playing baseball for a long time and this is one of the best games I have ever been apart of. The Ducks of old would be proud as we committed 0, that’s right 0 errors. Not even Berdine could Faff it up. Tish was a master on the mound against a great Hurricane lineup and our offense picked up where it left off and gave him a huge early cushion against a very good pitcher.
The top of the first went smoothly, Tish didn’t allow a baserunner until the 5th. The Ducks faced off against Rafalski throwing from the top of Mt. Everest and kept up the hot bats, scoring 4 of the first 5 to come to the plate and 6 overall in the bottom of the first. Lipp lined a ball in the hole to lead it off, advancing to second on T.J.’s single up the middle, and ending up at third after a botched ball by the Hurricane’s third baseman. I guessed right and started early to send a fastball to the left centerfield fence to score two and end up on second.
After watching this video I sent Gwin the following text…
July 25, 2011 12:46 PM I think we we win 2-0 berdine hits a bomb with flip on
With Flip on third, Berdine demolished a 1-0 slider over the high right centerfield at Volunteer into the trees, I got a chub. The feathered ones of South Oakland didn’t stop there. With two outs Ben “Benedict” Gwin rifled a single into right followed by Kenny Cool and then Tim Lipp’s second single of the inning, finally scoring on a Raflaski walk to Zarewicz.
Ben Gwin’s Senior Yearbook Photo
Ducks 6 Hurricanes 0
The second inning only saw three batters a side, but in the third the Ducks broke through for our 7th and final run. I hit the ball harder for an out to start off this inning than I did for my double in the first so I can’t be too upset, and only Fletch saw that the throw was offline and my lack of hustle cost us a baserunner… I owe him laps. Baumgartel and Berdine stayed hot with singles and Gwin wore a 90 mph fastball on the right shoulder to load the bases with 2 outs. Kenny Cool worked a fast ball count and swung early, sending a spinner out in front of the mound, Rafalski bobbled, fondled, and juggled the ball for a hustle E-1 and another Duck run.
Ducks 7 Hurricanes 0
The rest of the game was dominated by pitching and Duck defense. The only runner to reach second was Rafalski after a two out double, and one of the Hurricane’s 4 baserunners was thrown out at second on a strike em’ out, throw em’ out double play in the 6th. The last out was recorded as Holloway grounded out to Tish and the Ducks shutout the Hurricanes for the third time this season.
Some important facts about the Ducks this season.
-We shutout teams 12 times this season
-Elliot is second with 7
-We have outscored our opponents 22-0 in our two playoff games
-With 45 posts last time I checked, the last post was the most popular I have ever seen and it was a blurry playoff bracket and large Duck penis reference.
The Bulldogs beat us 14-1 and tore Whalen’s leg open in the first game of the year, they have outscored us 14-2. Pitching will be key, defense will be imperative, offense will be crucial. If South Oakland plays the way they have in the last two games, we won’t need a game 3. The bark of the Bulldogs vs. the quack of the Ducks this Saturday, venue and time TBA. Rob Cool is still gay.
It’s with humility earned through years of losing and almost winning that I write this rambling recap. It’s tempting just to posture for a whole blog post, but that wouldn’t do this justice.
We won the title and that speaks for itself. I have to much respect for Kenny and a hand full of his teammates (not all of them, obviously) to base this post on anything but our accomplishments rather than talk shit to the rest of the league.
That doesn’t mean it can’t happen in the comments section.
last season, I would have taken the time to photoshop this pic.
South Oakland entered the series with a 1-4 all-time post season record against the Black Sox, having lost the regular season series 2 games to 1. South Oakland was down three starters, and Brookline played without their left fielder and first baseman who are two of their best hitters. Injured Ducks catcher Brenden Scioscia kept score, Ducks great Rob Swanger sat on hand to anxiously dip and add chatter. Both did a fantastic job.
The Ducks’ depth prevailed on Saturday.
Once again the season flew by like a zeppelin, only this season it wasn’t the Hindenburg tragically bursting into flames at the hands of Kenny Powers and the Black Sox.
The proverbial Black Sox monkey has been fed the poisonous bandanna and made into a nice championship hat for Mark Guthrie to wear while he victoriously nurses his wounds accrued as a direct result of the viscous battle for the championship belt when he sacrificed his orbital bone to preserve the sanctity of the Ducks franchise and the Bat/Book family in the just ending to the story of the 2010 season and the legend of the bat.book family movie which is currently in production…
Joe, if we are no longer continuing the with the trophy, we should go with a belt.
Rob Cool agrees. His dramatic catch in game two helped preserve the South Oakland Victory
Both teams made errors, but the Ducks prevailed behind timely hitting and fewer mistakes.
Three misplayed balls in the Brookline outfield led to runs in game two.
The Ducks outfield not only kept everything in front of them, but Cool’s catch saved the game.
Cool went 0 for 2 at the plate in game two but he didn’t let it effect his play in the field, he battled he helped the team win.
Jim Fago caught two games and recorded the final out on the mound for the Ducks.
And for all the fuss about a couple kids from Owlz , and the addition of the college players [which was viewed by a vocal minority on the team as sacrilegious or some other holier than tho sanctimonius self-rightious bullshit, (and now that we won a title I will use that word on the blog again)] joining the Ducks, it was Mark Captain America Guthrie who made his first Ducks appearance in 2007, shutting down the Black Sox in the biggest game of his NABA career.
It was Jesse Smith getting on base and via-pinch runner Flip, scoring on Chris Wojton’s fielder’s choice and Wojton scoring what proved to be the winning run on Kenny Cool’s triple. It was Casale making all the plays in the field and turning the lineup over in the nine spot.
I caught the ball in left and didn’t coach us out of the championship. I’m glad i could contribute.
Not even the umpirescould stop us.
My only regret is so many Ducks were on vacation or moved to the west coast at couldn’t be here for the win and the celebration.
Now for the recap:
Game 1 opened as a pitchers duel. Rob Cool was thrown out at second in the top of the first attempting to stretch a single into a double.
Tony Casale robbed an angry sock of a hit with a diving play to his right early on.
Another Sock lined out to Gwin in left with runners on first and third in the second inning. He voiced his displeasure.
again, no photoshop. lots of cool pics come up when you google black sox, images...
South Oakland opened the scoring with four runs in the third.
Casale led off with a single and stole second. Lipp and Cool followed with back to back walks.
DeFilippo singled in two and Fago drove in a run with a sac fly.
Jesse Smith drove in a run with an RBI ground out.
That’s all the Ducks would need.
James Tessyier allowed one run in the bottom of the fourth. he finished with 5H, 1BB, 4Ks and 1 run over seven innings.
Taking game one was imperative. We carried over the momentum.
South Oakland led the series 1-0 and the smiths brought us food between games which gave us the energy we needed to sweep the series. Mr. Smith justifiably said the blog was sub-par this season, but congratulated me on a solid blogging year in ’09.
Thank you to the Smiths and all our fans for supporting us all year.
GAME 2
Guthrie and his nemesis Peter Pan Chalfin squared off in the series pivotal game.
Guthrie recorded a 1-2-3 first with the help of a blown call by the first base ump which evened out the blown call by the plate ump.
Rob Baumgartel gave the Ducks and early 2-0 lead with a bases loaded double in the bottom of the first.
The Black Sox did not expect to be down early with Chalfin on the mound. It felt like they started to press.
that f-ing splitter!
The Sox scored an unearned run in the top of the third to close the gap to 2-1.
South Oakland added a run in the bottom half of the inning on James Fago’s RBI double to left which scored Anthony DeFilippo from third.
the score remained 3-1 Ducks until the bottom of the sixth when Jesse Smith singled with one out, and stole second via DeFilippo. Chalfin wisely walked Baumgartel to get to Gwin, but Gwin pinch hit Wojton for himself.
On a hit and run, Wojton ripped a ball ticketed for centerfield that was knocked down by a diving Matt Slavonic who stepped on second, but was unable to turn the double play. and pinch runner DeFilippo scored from second.
Big RBI for Wojton.
brought the ruckus
4-1 Ducks
Then Kenny Cool tripled to right field to give South Oakland a four-run cushion going into the final frame.
Guthrie allowed three hits and one earned run through six innings of work, holding Pittsburgh NABA legend Kenny Powers without a hit.
I wanted Guth to be on the mound when we won, but it was not to be. He still celebrated like a champion afterwords and he earned the win with a typical gutsy effort.
In the top of the seventh, an infield hit, an error and another single followed by a run scoring groundout cut the Ducks’ lead to 5-2.
One out and men on second and third top seven:
Florian hit a ball that would have gone out of any other ball park, but Rob Cool made a game saving catch at the wall and nearly doubled up the runner at third, but the relay hit the runner and bounced into the dugout. the runner was awarded home and the Ducks led by a score of 5-4 with two out an nobody on.
Fago entered the game to pitch. He walked Sloan who advanced to third when Golddust singled to right.
Golddust is always a factor when you play the SOX.
Two outs, runner on third Black Sox down by one.
Who would you want at the plate if you are a Brookline supporter?
Kenny f-ing Powers is who. Duck killer, and one of the best hitters our league has ever seen.
the 2-2 pitch was grounded to Lipp his throw was true and the Ducks won their second title, ending the seven year championship drought.
5-4 Ducks.
Game, Series, Championship.
NOTES
Tim Lipp and Tony Casale set the standard for unselfishness this season. Casale welcomed the move to second base when we brought on DeFilippo, and Tim Lipp, who starts at shortstop for DII Gannon University, played third base without issue. On this note, Rob “Baconator” Bamgartel also stepped up late in the season when i know he wanted to pitch more, and played a solid first base and hit the ball as well as anyone when it mattered most.
The team first mentality won us the title as much as Fago’s sexy biceps or any other individual performance.
Now we have all summer to talk about V-neck uniforms and continued celebrations instead of trying to figure out what went wrong against the Black Sox.
The relief and elation still haven’t quite set in.
It’s been hard work this year, and for seven years trying to get back to this point.
An anecdote comes to mind with this title:
oh, boy i bet it's riveting.
Playing legion ball for the now defunct post 339 back in 1999, I singled up the middle late in a game in which we were being dominated, earlier i reached on a ball that I hit between second and third which the shortstop had to range deep in the gap, and when he came up he bobbled it and didn’t make the throw.
the late game single was a clean hit, the first clean hit of the game, and since the guy wouldn’t have had a no-hitter, i got credit for the first boarderline hit.
Had we lost, the Ducks first title would still count despite the sandlot state of the league in ’03, but by getting a clean hit in 2010, beating the best teams in the playoffs , (the Militia and the Sox, both of whom beat the Hurricanes in the oddly constructed playoff format) in what has become a far more competitive league than i could have ever imagined, we added more credibility to the ’03 title.
We are two time champs, it’s legit.
The South Oakland franchise book-ended the trophy on Saturday. We have as many titles as any other team in the league, spanning the greatest number of years between titles.
No team has gone back to back and no team has won three championships, but let’s enjoy this one for a while.
Talking with Scioscia and Flip after the game, what the Owlz lacked last year was unity and I’d like to think I helped bring this team togther when it could have become clique-y. I thank TC Jones and Rob Cool for helping me with this.
Last year’s Owlz needed the Ducks as much as the Ducks needed the first year players, in order to win a championship.
The chemistry experiment was a success – far better than that time you tried to make your own LSD in that shady basement on Semple Street and wound up in Western Maryland four days later, shivering naked in the back of an 18-wheeler rambling about the woods behind Moore Park.
Everyone is welcome back, players on this year’s roster have first rights to a spot on next year’s club as we start our title defense and we’ll fill in as needed. It is a consensus among everyone who celebrated at the Cool’s on Saturday night that maintaining chemistry is more important than overhauling the roster with bunch of former minor league players.
I’d like to thank my teammates/players for giving me the chance to play on a winner again.
The South Oakland Ducks and the Pittsburgh Bulldogs are two good amateur baseball teams. Both teams are part of the Pittsburgh NABA. I play on the Ducks. Many of my friends play on the Bulldogs. When I don’t play for the Ducks, I play on the Bulldogs in a different league for old men. That league is run by a douche bag and another guy who latently cheats to improve his team at the expense of others— I call that a conflict of interest.
A douche bag looks like this:
The Bulldogs drink quite a bit. When I drink my brain turns into a coffin filled with green and yellow balloon animals, so I quit. Joe is a Bulldog. Joe runs the Pittsburgh NABA without conflict of interest; he recapped the last Ducks Bulldogs game because the Bulldogs won. Joe accidentally hit himself in the ankle with a foul ball in Monday’s game against the Ducks. In that game, the Ducks beat the Bulldogs 19-6. Because the Ducks won, I am writing this recap to be posted on the Bulldogs site.
Normally, when I write blogs, they look like this:
The Rebels is a stupid name for a team
{pic of stupid rebel team altered with computer software.}
Sort-of-funny caption.
Now some mildly clever nicknames…
And so on…
Quack.
Because this recap is also for the Bulldogs site, I am poorly imitating an author I admire.
Listen:
The first place Ducks have won ten straight games, and are playing well enough to win the division. The team is carving a niche as a talented, but hard working, blue collar team which is exactly what the Ducks manager hoped would happen. The Bulldogs are also in first place in their division and have a similar reputation. I call these divisions Campbell and Wales because I like hockey.
In the first inning of the game against the Bulldogs, Ducks ace James Tessyier, allowed a run. This doesn’t happen often. Going into the game, James had only allowed three runs in 25+ innings. That’s why he’s our ace.
An Ace looks like this:
In the bottom half of the first inning, The Ducks scored three runs when Jams Fago hit a home run.
This is what happens when I remember the home run backwards: James moonwalks out of the dugout and high fives everyone, then jogs backwards around the bases, uses the force to pick up his bat and waits for the bushes in center field to spit the ball back at him before he slingshots it into the Bulldogs pitcher’s hand. The Bulldogs pitcher was Brian Strom. He is my friend and a good pitcher and baseball player. He is not, however, the Bulldogs ace. Later in the first, Ducks short stop Anthony DeFilippo hit a ball to the fence in left and was thrown out at second base. So it goes.
3-1 Ducks after 1.
The Bulldogs scored two more runs in the second to tie the game at three runs apiece going into the bottom half of the inning. Then the Ducks scored two more runs when Captain America hit a double. Captain America is Mark Guthrie’s somewhat clever nickname.
Captain America’s shield looks like this:
Guthrie only hits doubles. Gwin lined out to the short stop. So it goes. Cinefra reached on an error, and stole second. Captain America scored when Tim Lipp hit a sac fly. Then Rob Cool hit a double that was nearly a home run. He wanted to hit a home run real bad because he and James Fago are in love and both want very badly to be the best player on the Ducks. This competition makes the Ducks better.
Ducks 5-3 after 2.
The Bulldogs made three straight outs in the third inning with the help of a nice double play. The Bulldogs catcher is from Youngstown or some other decaying mill town. He hit into the nice double play and did not have any hits in the game.
The kids in Youngstown look like this:
Mike Tyson also lives near Youngstown. The inside of Mike Tyson’s brain looks like this:
In the bottom of the third, the Ducks scored four runs.
Chris Wojton recorded his fifth hit in his last six at bats, then he stole second. At some point in the game, the Bulldogs catcher had derogatory things to say about the caliber of play of the baseball team at Waynesburg University and our shortstop Anthony Defillipo and by proxy several Ducks who also play baseball at Waynesburg University. After Wojton stole second, he advanced to third on a passed ball. A passed ball is when the catcher misses the pitch and hurts his team. With one out, Guthrie walked, and the Ducks executed a hit and run. Wojton scored.
When Wojton makes good plays I use this picture:
Gwin stole second base. Guthrie scored on Cinefra’s single and Gwin went to third.
If Gwin had been thrown out at second he would not have scored on Tim Lipp’s single to the right side.
Tim Lipp plays college baseball at Gannon, and is willing to play out of position to help the Ducks win more games. Tim Lipp was thrown out at second, so it goes. Mike Cinefra scored from third on the throw.
9-3 after three.
In the top of the fourth, Rob Cool threw out a guy at home trying to score on a fly out to center.
In the fourth inning, the Ducks scored ten runs. These Ducks had hits in that inning:
Jesse Smith, Anthony Defilippo, Chris Wojton Nick Homa, KT Murphy, James Fago, Baconator, and Ken Cool.
TC Jones had an RBI.
Rick Whalen was hit in the back. Everyone laughed. Rick is OK.
Ken Cool is our assistant coach. He was hit in the back while coaching third earlier in the game. We all laughed. Ken is OK too.
19-3 after 4
In the fifth inning the Bulldogs showed why they are a good team. They did not quit. Vinny Gala is a good hitter and we could not get him out. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the last inning but still lost by 13 runs. So it goes.
RIPKVJr.
The Ducks play a double header Saturday Morning at 8am against the Militia at Gateway Middle School in Monroeville.
The Ducks (13-5, 4-1) victory over the Matadors (8-8, ?), coupled with the forfeit win over the Titans, improved South Oakland’s all time record to 79-80-2.
A win over the Bulldogs Monday night will bring the club’s record back to .500 for the first time since 2004 when the Ducks record stood at at 7-7 after their first 14 games.
The 2010 Ducks have won nine straight since starting the season 4-5.
***
Captain America and The Baconator combined to scatter nine hits over six innings vs. the Matadors, allowing a combined 2 earned runs.
pregame quacking was solid, clearly setting the tone. Whalen gets the troops fired up:
With the game tied 1-1 after 1 inning, the Ducks scored 10 runs with 2 outs in the top of the second.
With the bases loaded, Gwin drove in two with a blistering shot between second and third that the SS oléd to save his own life, Duffy walked to reload the bases, then Tim Lipp cleared the bases with a triple.
then:
The Ducks weren’t done.
Defilippo was hit by a pitch and stole second, then Wojton drove in Flip and Cool with his second hit of the inning.
Wojton finished the day with a solid 3-4, 2b, 3rbi, 3r line.
Baconator doubled to drive in Wojton to finished the quacking in the 10-run second.
11-1 after two
Captain gored the Matadors in the bottom of the inning, striking out their 3rd baseman on 3 pitches.
the ‘dors added three runs in the third.
11-3 after three.
their 3rd baseman proceeded to make seven errors in the fourth.
The Ducks added three runs in the fourth with help from the afforementioned errors:
Lipp reached on an error, Cool elbow dropped a single to left, a run scored on WOjton’s shot to third that was thrown away, Guthrie advanced to first after he swung at a passed ball on purpose to advance to first, then Whalen drove in a run with an infield single to third base.
13-3 after four
13-4 after five
TC Jones drove in a run with a fielder’s choice in the sixth, Wojton addad an RBI double.
Baconator closed the door in the bottom half of the inning,
15-4 after six.
Game. Ducks.
Quack.
Note: The Militia took the bulldogs out to the farm this morning, 14-3.
Seems like a classic let down after beating the Canes game. The Bulldogs will be looking to rebound Monday.
The Militia will be fighting for their season on the 10th.
Huge 8am divisional double header at Militia HQ on July 10th.
