I’ll post updates after the league meetings in January.
Roster spots for next years Ducks team will be offered to returning players first, and we will fill in as needed. We will also add a couple pitchers because our staff has an average age of 32.
Look for Ducks utility player, Anthony Ciccone’s NABA hotstove blog. Coming soon!

A Message From The Commish Regarding Player Eligibility and Protests, Some Notes on Bill Franciscus, and a Brief History of the Ducks Cheating
NABA, pittsburgh NABA, South Oakland Ducks BaseballGentlemen –
(Joe why are you putting 2 spaces after a period!?!)
I think Joe did the right thing here. I also think the player in question is probably ineligible. Generally, I agree with how Joe runs the league. He’s fair and honest, and I’d never want to put up with the kind of shit he does.
Maybe it’s because I can remember when our league played 3pm double headers at Cornell, and we operated at a loss for six years that I don’t really have an issue with most of the problems we have today. However, I do think there is room for our league to improve, but I’m just happy to be playing and without Joe putting all this time and effort into the League there wouldn’t be a Ducks.
The Ducks might have just been eliminated by a team with an illegal player, but whatever. That’s not why we lost games 2 and 3. We made more mistakes than West View did, and we didn’t capitalize on some opportunities. I will reiterate that I’m not 100% West View had a guy who only played 4 games on their roster, but I didn’t want to bother with the protest and all the bullshit and maybe be wrong. We play in an adult league that is marketed as one for players of all ages and abilities, and if teams feel the need to bring in guys for the playoffs then that’s pretty weak. I know because I’ve done it, and it feels shitty.
In the TC Jones era, we brought Pitt club guys in all the time. It was fun. No one really cared. They were all Bill Franciscus, and we worked within the roster rules to have them eligible for playoffs. Again, against the spirit, but within the letter of the law.
In 2011, TJ Zarewicz played maybe 4 regular season games for us, then played for us in the playoffs legally. He plays on the WOLFPACK now for some reason. In 2012, after the 5 game minimum was created, DeFillippo was on our roster from the start of the season, played for us and in the Daily News league, and only appeared in 4 games as a Duck and then played in the playoffs where he drove in the winning run in a 2-1 win over the Militia. I lied to the Militia manager’s face when called out on this and I feel shitty when I lie to people. I don’t do it much. Tremmel, I’m sorry for lying and cheating in 2012. I’m even sorrier for playing TJ over guys who had been on the Ducks for 4 years and deserved a chance to play in the playoffs that season.

I think the first instance of Zarewicz in 2011 was a worse thing for me to allow as a manager, than the instance with Flip, even though it was legal and the 2012 instance wasn’t. For the sake of the other guys on the team anyway, it caused a rift. I considered Flip a teammate, and TJ as a guy who came in and played catcher for us. Both good guys and good ballplayers.
A big reason why I wanted to drop down to Single A was to avoid feeling pressure to pull shady roster moves at the expense of guys who had been there all year. We were legit this season.
I’d like to open this up for discussion below. I ask that anyone commenting on this identify themselves.

Ducks Lose, Season Over.
2014 South Oakland Ducks, pittsburgh NABA, South Oakland Ducks BaseballSouth Oakland lost 5-0 to the WOLFPACK Wednsday night in Carrick.
We scored zero runs, I think we only allowed one or two earned runs, but that was enough.
The Ducks only had two men in scoring postion all game. Not a great offensive night without our leadoff and five hitters. Their pitcher was lights out. Galvanek, Gwin, Hartranft and Sorosky (2) had hits for the Ducks, and that was it.
I think I’m pulling for the Lions in the finals. Their home field is more interesting.

This wasn’t the way we would’ve liked the season to end, but I’m more optimistic about the core group of players we have and the state of the team big picture-wise than I have been in years. This was the most fun I’ve had playing baseball since 2008.
We won a lot of games, many on the last at bat or by one run in come from behind fashion. With a few pieces we should content for the championship again, and I think moving ahead we will always be right there, quacking and playing teams tough as long as we can keep the nucleus intact. Feathers and bills and such. Green and gold. We were really close. Next year Garrett will announce games from the press box in Spring Hill, and maybe podcast play-by-play of our games. That would dominate the Lions fancy webpage with ther robot game recaps! Maybe we can get a decent writer on the blog. Though, Ciccone offered to write up team by team season previews before next season, so look for them in late March!
For next year, we need to figure out what youth leagues have all the city permits so we can get better time slots and help get PSL off the baseball fields. There are so many softball fields. Quit ruining our mounds, and trashing our batter’s boxes! Slow pitch softball is the worst.
Anyway, thanks for reading and thanks for a great season.

Semifinals Game 3: Ducks vs Wolfpack
2014 South Oakland DucksDucks Lose
2014 South Oakland Ducks, pittsburgh NABAWest View 6, South Oakland of the North Side 2.
Ducks starting ptcher Brian Stom faced 10 batters through 3, and South Oakland lead 1-0 going into the top of the bottom of the 4th.
There were a couple plays that weren’t made by the Ducks, a walk or two, and the WOLFPACK scored five in the bottom of the fourth, and we couldn’t get back in it.
We ran out of a couple innings, We had 10 hits, but we weren’t able to string anything together. it was really frustrating.
At one point one of our guys ran into their catcher who was well up the line, and their catcher wanted to fight or something. It was ridiculous. Benches partially cleared. Everyone should have been tossed. No one was.
The West View pitcher threw a good game, working out of trouble a few times. Two of their guys hit the ball pretty hard, their four hitter, and that guy who no one seems to have seen play during the regular season.
After the game, the West View coach was nice enough to offer to play game 3 at their home field. Ducks management declined the offer.
*EDIT game Saturday will be at Stoneridge, time tbd

In other Pittsburgh NABA news, Jefferson Hills lost in the opening round of AA playoffs in a big upset to Cranberry. Then Cranberry took one look the Cherokee’s awesome alternate jerseys in their next winners bracket game, and forfeited. The Rebels were crushed by the Bulldogs, the Black Sox beat West End, in what has become an intense seres between the two teams. The Carrick Express can eliminate Jefferson Hills on Saturday. I hope it comes down to Brookline and the Cherokee and that their is a fight in the stands and lots of guys getting beaned. It would be like old times.
The other side of the Single A bracket hasn’t started yet.

Ducks Win.
2014 South Oakland DucksSouth Oakland scored 7 runs in the 4th inning, overcoming a 3-0 deficit en-route to a 8-5 victory in game 1 of the semifinals at Springview Field Monday night.
Jason Fetter threw five innings, allowing 4 earned runs, and recorded his first playoff win as a Duck. Ben Sorosky pitched a scoreless sixth inning, and Anthony Ciccone recorded the save, striking out the West View cleanup hitter with the bases loaded in the seventh.
Matt Limbach went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, Rob Galvanek went 2-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI, Brandon Culp and DJ Dover each had multi-hit games.
Ducks catcher, Rob Galvanek threw out 2 runners out at second.
Short stop Tony Casale made a diving stop behind second base and threw out a runner from his knees to save a run. It was one of the best plays by an infielder I’ve seen in person.
Game 2 is Wednsday night, 8:30PM at John Herb Field.

Semifinals Game 1: Ducks vs. WOLFPACK
2014 South Oakland Ducks, pittsburgh NABADucks Earn #2 Seed, First Round Bye.
2014 South Oakland Ducks, pittsburgh NABAI got the tie breaker scenarios wrong in figuring out where we would have to finish record wise to get the 2nd seed.
The first tie breaker is head to head record. Then it’s runs allowed head to head. I thought it was overall runs allowed.
We’ve outscored the WOLFPACK 19-16 in head to head play, but have a 1-2 record against them. However, our rain delayed game has essentially been ruled a forfeit in our favor since there is no time to make it up. Therefore, we have avoided the 3/6 matchup against the Monsters, and will play the winner of Sunday’s Monsters/WOLFPACK game on Monday night. Time and place TBD.

The Ghost of Larry Z: Ducks Spilt Double Header. Throwback Game Resounding Success.
2014 South Oakland Ducks, pittsburgh NABA, South Oakland Ducks BaseballThe South Oakland Ducks of the North Side lost 11-10 to the Monongahela Monsters Wednesday Night. The Monsters really hit well, and we didn’t make enough plays in the field to help out our depleted pitching staff. On the bright side, Brandon Culp looked really good in a relief appearance, and no one got hurt who wasn’t already injured. We had our four hitter at the plate in the seventh with two outs and the tying run on second, and we couldn’t get a run across.
The Ducks fell behind 6-0 early, and came back to tie the game at 6, scoring six runs with two out in the fourth, but after a season full of come from behind wins, we couldn’t pull out another one on the last day of the season. The Monsters took an 11-7 lead into the seventh, and we couldn’t complete the comeback. We paid for digging such a big hole for ourselves. Hats off the Monsters, who we will likely play Sunday night at 6pm in a terrifying first round matchup. The Monsters beat us twice this season, and played us close in a 11-10 Ducks victory in Brentwood a few weeks ago.
This loss hurt, given that the Warriors upset the WOLFPACK!!! on Wednesday night, and if we’d won, we likely would have secured a bye. Whatever.
It’s still possible we will have a first round bye, but we should plan on being ready to play Sunday at 6 pm vs. either the Monsters or Senators.

Game 2:
Another pitcher’s duel. This game featured a fly ball that bounced off our backup right fielder’s chest and into the murky area between second, center and right before it was thrown aimlessly back towards the pitchers mound by our backup center fielder, allowing a run to score. That play summed up the double header pretty well.
Brandon Culp hit a home run to right center for the Ducks. That third baseman for the Bombers hit one out to left center. Jason Fetter had two hits for the Ducks, including one on the last play of the game–a shot to right field before the lights went out with the ball still in the air.
South Oakland’s Donnie Petril had the game winning RBI in the top of the fifth.
Barring a highly unlikely scenario, which I will discuss in a subsequent blog post, South Oakland will start the playoffs on Sunday, July 20th, 6pm at Moore Park.
Quack.
