2014 South Oakland Ducks, Ducks win

Ducks 10, Monsters 9

South Oakland (10-3) held on to beat the Monsters 10-9 at the hidden field of Brentwood on Sunday. The Monsters fell to 5-8 on the season.

Here’s a cheap bulleted recap

  • Ben Sorosky returned to the mound after a 3 year hiatus and recorded a 2-inning save for starter and winning pitcher Brian Strom. Both Ducks pitched well despite combining to allow 9 runs.
  • Strom has been great for us on the mound this season.
  • Jason Fetter had three hits and added 2 huge insurance runs in the seventh
  • Galvanek also had three hits
  • We stole bases.
  • We made some odd base running decisions.
  • South Oakland turned a sweet 3-6-3 double play with runners on first and second and nobody out in the sixth.
  • We won without five starters. I think the Monsters were down a few guys as well, so whatever. We still have good depth.
  • Mike Brandt leaned into a pitch and was told to stay at the plate. I am now not the only Duck to have done this.
  • All ten Ducks reached base safely or drove in a run. Lots of productive outs.
  • We’re tied for first with North America (11-4) who beat the WOLFPACK!!! 9-7 Saturday night. The WOLFPACK!!! is 9-4.
  • We either play Wed at 6:15 in Etna, or we have a double header at home at 6:15 on Wed. I’m not sure which. Management will text everyone when the location is confirmed with the other managers and the league office.

Ducks Win

2014 South Oakland Ducks, Ducks win, pittsburgh NABA

South Oakland of the North Side (8-3) came away with a 2-1 victory over the Titans(5-7) in Bellevue, Sunday afternoon.

Ducks’ starter, Brian Strom pitched five innings for the victory, scattering 7 hits, striking out 7, and recording his league-leading seventh hit batter. He also smashed his head against the fence after a diving attempt at a foul ball down the right field line in the 7th. He returned to the game.

Anthony Ciccone recorded the 2-inning save.

Culp and Ciccone had RBI for the Ducks.

Both starting pitchers pitched out of trouble all game, and there was solid defense from both sides.

Donnie had a sweet base hit in the fifth. Limbach also singled. Culp doubled in the game winning run in the first. We thought we lost Riley for while in the sixth.

The game ended on a deep fly out to left field that RBI Collector, Matt Swetz, misjudged initially before making a heart stopping, backpedaling, tumbling catch to seal the victory.

I’m surprised the Titans don’t have a better record.

Game Seven Recap. Strom Thurmond’s corpse: Ducks 14, Senators 5

2014 South Oakland Ducks, NABA, pittsburgh NABA, Recap

senators steven segal

The Senators jumped out to an early lead after Joseph McCarthy led off the game with a double, stole third, exploited America’s fear of communism, and scored on a fielder’s choice.

In the bottom of the first, after a single and two walks loaded the bases, Brandon Culp struck a blow for America and took Jesse Helms deep.

helms

The Ducks scored another run in the inning on Bob Faust’s fielder’s choice.

5-1 Ducks after 1.

The Senators kept the game close for an inning, when they added two runs in the second off an error on a potential double play ball hit by Rick Santorum.

Santorum supports the above slogan.

The score remained 5-3 until the bottom of the third when South Oakland blew it open.

iceburgh

Iceberg doubled off the wall to start the inning, Dover singled the Ducks’ catcher to third then Faust walked, and Sorosky singled in a run to put the Ducks up 6-3. Gwin walked to load the bases with 2 outs for Ciccone who hit the Ducks’ second grand slam of the game and chased starting pitcher Ted Kennedy.

10-3 Ducks after 3.

Riley made a diving catch in right in the fourth, then got lost on his way to center field in the fifth. Dorsek played an inning without his hat for some reason then pinch ran. Fetter threw a six-pitch inning in relief.

Alexander Daigle made an appearance. The Senators scored two more to make it 10-5 after 5.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Ducks added three insurance runs on a double, two singles, an error, and a sac fly.

Ciccone retired the side in the seventh to end the game.

There was pizza and beer.

Misc:

  • Lost in all the grand slamming was a solid outing by TC, and a pretty clean game by our starting defense.
  • Our smaller home field may have helped with one of the home runs, but it also kept a few really hard hit balls in the gap to singles. It’s also not very easy to see at the plate.
  • The strike zone has been really wide all year.
  • Swetz only hits with runners on base. Our three through seven hitters had the following stats:
  • Ciccone: 2 for 3, BB, HR, 2B, 4 RBI
  • Culp: 2 for 4, HR, 2SB, 5 RBI
  • Swetz: 0 for 4, RE, R, 0 LOB
  • Galvanek: 3 for 4, 2B, SB, RBI
  • Dover: 3 for 3, 2B, SF, RBI
  • If our two hitter would get on base more, we’d be in even better shape.

Jason Fetter pitched a complete game for the win, allowing 0 earned runs 5 hits, striking out 8.

South Oakland scored a run in the first inning on a single, sac bunt, WP/throwing error. The Ducks stranded the bases loaded in the second. The score remained 1-0 until  the 4th inning when RBI collector Matt Swetz drove in 2 with an almost-triple in which he hit a ball to the left center gap, stumbled around first advanced to second and then moved to third on a throwing error.

In the fifth, South Oakland scored five runs and put it out of reach. Brian Strom drove in 2 with a double to left. later in the inning, DJ Dover tripled in two more runs, and scored on Sorosky’s RBI ground out.

The Senators scored 2 unearned runs. one in the bottom of the fifth, and one in the seventh. If we can cut down on errors we will be tough to beat.

giant ducks

Some other things:

I entered our stats, but the league site isn’t calculating ABs correctly. We’re hitting well, but we don’t have 3 guys hitting 1.000.

If we ever have all 19 players show up at once, I’m going to have a heart attack. It’s hard enough getting 14 guys in to a game and spread out the playing time in a way that allows us to still win games. I forgot how much of a pain in the ass that is.

How have managers not entered scores for games that happened weeks ago? It takes literally 30 seconds.

South Oakland next plays on Wednesday, 8pm at Springview Field.

Here’s an awesome Easter pic for everyone.

Ducks Win. 9-4

2014 South Oakland Ducks, Ducks win, NABA, pittsburgh NABA, South Oakland Ducks Baseball

South Oakland won it’s first game of the season defeating the West View Wolfpack 9-5.

Tony Casale went 4-for-4. Brandon Culp went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Matt Swetz hit a sweet double over some kid’s head. Jason Fetter pitched four innings allowing 1 earned run. Brian Strom allowed 1 run over three strong relief innings. Ducks pitchers combined to strike out nine wolfpacks, nine wolves? nine wolfpack? Whatever. I think West View only had four hits, depending how loose their book is.

We made fewer mistakes than they did, and looked pretty good all things considered. We’re going to score a lot of runs this season.

West View is a basically the old Matadors/Sharks. I don’t know how they scammed their way into that 8:30 John Herb time slot.

The game ended on a dropped third strike with the bases loaded. After the strike out,  the Ducks catcher, Anthony Ciccone, picked up the ball and stepped on the plate, to end the game, but  the Wolfpack batter ran to first for some reason and tried to run over our first baseman. Nice.

South Oakland plays next on Wednesday, 8pm at Springview Field.

Mike Brandt is going to live tweet the first few inning of the game before he leaves for work. I’m expecting great things. Also, we’ll have our uniforms.

Eight Men Out: South Oakland pulls into final playoff spot with 5 games remaining

2013 South Oakland Ducks Baseball

South Oakland (7-12) played with 8 players for five innings and still beat Carrick 4-3 at Beedle Park in Western Maryland on June 23rd.

Fago has won like 5 straight decisions on the mound, and leads the team in wins and saves.

South Oakland lost 6-0 to the Cleveland Indians on Sunday in a rain-shortened affair.

Screen Shot 2013-07-01 at 3.52.30 PM

[Standings as of Monday, July 1st]

The Black Sox have picked it up, going from 10th to 7th over the last couple weeks.

Everyone else is falling back to the pack.

The Ducks have two games to reschedule vs. West End, Pour House this Saturday, then finish with Elliot and Brookline on the season’s final weekend.

After looking at the schedules of the rest of the teams outside the top 4, basically, we control our own destiny since the other 5-10 teams will beat up on each other.

I said at one point we needed ten wins to make it in, and i think that should still do it.

After a 1-9 start we could conceivably finish as high as fifth, but we have to keep winning. Pending rescheduled games, South Oakland plays Brookline on the last day of the regular season.

Standings, Playoff Push, etc

2013 South Oakland Ducks Baseball

South Oakland has a tough 3-game stretch coming up in which we play the artists formerly known as Day Toyota, and then a double header against the Bulldogs at John Herb the following weekend.

There is some serious separation going on here between the haves and have-nots.

It’s going to be a shit show at the bottom of the bracket. Conceivably we could see the militia, Carrick and pour house drop a few games coming up.

right now, Elliot, Clinton, the Bulldogs and Ashley Shaffer are battling for position in the top four and then it’s everyone else.

Elliot is good.

Cranberry sucks.

that’s my expert analysis.

Unfortunately our team is constructed as such that we can lose 15-1 to teams that suck because we lack pitching depth and infield depth, and sometimes our players don’t show up.

The winable  games we dropped to Carrick, Pour House and Cranberry and the forfeit to the Militia really hurt right now, but at least we’re finally putting up runs and winning games.

We have to steal a couple against teams that are above us in the standings, which is almost everyone.

We might be able to jump in the standings before we play this sunday.

We need all hands on deck Sunday. Jefferson Davis Hills is good. If we have to throw out a patchwork lineup with random single A players we will get embarrassed.

We can give them a game if everyone shows up.

This is most likely the last season of the Ducks as a Double A team, we at least need to make the playoffs and give it one final run.

Ducks Win

2013 South Oakland Ducks Baseball, Ducks win, pittsburgh NABA

South Oakland jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings, and held off a late Brookline rally to win 9-5.

James Fago pitched a complete game for the much-needed victory, and added an RBI single.

Ducks right fielder Zach Skowvron literally knocked out the Sox starting pitcher with a line drive to the groin area that went for a bases loaded, rbi single in the third.

I hope that guy isn’t pissing blood. it looked like it really hurt.

The Ducks did a good job of stranding Black Sox runners, and getting timely hits.

For the Ducks, Baumgartel hit a triple, Anthony Ciccone was 2-for-3 with two doubles, Stahl 2-for-4 with a double, Gwin was 2-for-4 with a double and 3 rbi, Skowvron was 2-for-3 with a walk. 8 South Oakland starters recorded a hit, and all nine reached base safely at least once.

The above might not be 100% accurate, I don’t have the book, but we hit well.

For the Sox, Kenny Powers and Goldie hit triples.

Florian hustled.

A win against the Black Sox, in Brookline, is always big.

South Oakland has scored 26 runs in its last 3 games and looks to keep the momentum going throughout the weekend.

South Oakland next plays a double header at Cranberry, Saturday, 1pm.

Ducks Win

2013 South Oakland Ducks Baseball, Ducks win, pittsburgh NABA, South Oakland Ducks Baseball

South Oakland improved to 1-2 on the season with a 3-0 win over the Monroville Militia, Saturday at Woodland Hills.

Ducks pitcher, Randy Patten, worked out of trouble early and threw a complete game shutout to improve to 1-1 on the season.

James Fago and Tj Morgan drove in runs for South Oakland.

Game 2 of the scheduled double header was cancelled due to rain.

Next up for the Ducks, a doubleheader against former Duck great, Ken Cool, and the Clinton Cherokee in Imperial next Saturday at 2pm.

I hear Clinton has sick new warmup jackets and alternate jerseys.
