Game Seven Recap: Walk Away. Ducks 4, Matadors 3

South Oakland Ducks Baseball

South Oakland of the North Side quacked it’s way above .500 for the first time this season with an extra-inning victory over the slumping Matadors.

Thanks to Getty Images for photo of Matadors' ex-head coach R. Tiedeman.

Perhaps the Mighty Zeus is punishing the Matadors  for being named after a human entity which kills the god’s favorite animal in a manner that is not in accordance with traditional Greek cow sacrifices. Zeus is always turning himself into a bull and banging some half god-half mortal lady in the myths.

There’s no other explanation.

At least they weren’t struck by lightening, that would’ve been too much.

Once again, Mark Guthrie played a key role in the Ducks win; going the full eight on the hill in a Zeus-like performance. All the marvel comics are basically adaptations of Greek Mythology, including this guy (disguised as a WWII propaganda device – note: shield similar to that of Ares)  …

The Ducks hit at least five line drives right at their center fielder who was playing on top of second base.

Guthrie K’d 4 of the first six outs recorded in the first two innings for South Oakland.

All 4 down on strikes, two looking

The Ducks struck first in the bottom of the second, Jesse Smith singled, Kirk walked, Gwin hit into a fielder’s choice and stole second.

Runners on second and third for Rob Baumgartel

Smith scored, and Old Man Gwin was meat at the plate. Although it appeared he jumped over the catcher and avoided the tag.

The plate ump saw otherwise.

Gwin broke his hip in the process and would sub himself out later in the game.

I was over the tag, I'm telling you.

The ‘doors scored in the top of the third on a fielder’s choice.

and again in the top of the 4th

In the top of the 5th, Kenny Cool (who subbed in for Gwin who left to watch Matlock and yell at teenagers) made a Brooks Robinsonian attempt at a ball down the line at 3rd and nearly got the guy at first.

IN the bottom half of the inning Cinefra drove in two runs with an RBI single to right center.

Cinefra is a beast.

3-2 Ducks.

He made a nice catch in the 6th to preserve the lead.

The Matadors scored another unearned run in the top of the 7th.

3-3

The Ducks left a runner on second in the bottom of the 7th.

I told Jones he was going in to pitch the 8th.

Guthrie wasn’t havin’ it. He went out to the mound before i could say anything.  If one guy got on base he was comin’ out.

Captain retired the Matadors in order.

The Ducks loaded the bases and Ken Cool stepped to the plate and the Matadors walked him.

Game. Ducks.

  • We’re effectively a whole game behind the 4-2 Black Sox, and we have a tough three-game stretch this weekend.
  • We’ll have just about our full roster.  We’ll get an accurate gauge of where we are when the dust settles on Teusday.
  • One game at a time, but we can’t afford to drop two games to the Black Sox.
  • The Bulldogs and Hurricanes games will be used to see who is going to fit where.
  • Not the best two teams to still be tinkering with shit against, but the Black Sox game is the big one.
  • If we don’t win the division, we can’t play for the AA title and we don’t get a bye in the playoffs.
  • This year its the team with the best division record who wins the Wales Conference.

Quack, Quack, Quack, Quack. Ducks Win 4th Straight .

Ducks 4, Matadors 3 (8 innings)

Mark Guthrie earned the complete game victory.
Captain America allowed one earned run and K’d 10.
Ken Cool drove in Tim Lipp with a bases loaded walk to end the game.
Anticlimactic, but we’ll take it.

Baumgartel, and Cinefra (2) had the other RBI for the Ducks.
Gwin recorded his first HBP of the season.

South Oakland of the North Side (4-3) takes their win streak into John Herb Field Saturday morning for an 8:30am date with the first place Bulldogs (6-1).

Batting Practice 6:30 Pitt IM Field

Candlesticks are nice.

A couple years back, the Matadors really pushed the conspiracy theory to the limit.
The team’s head bullfighter allegedly offered a bribe to a current Duck who once ran another team in the Pgh NABA. The Bullfighter asked the former coach to throw a game to spite the commish and his team and take a playoff spot form the Bulldogs.

Last season, the Matadors were taken over by a new guy who did not have the good sense to change the team name to the Bulls, or anything that doesn’t have to do with slaughtering perfectly good bovines.

However the Matador unis are solid and they look expensive, and while the lack of a team named the Bulls is bothersome, buying new threads for the sake of having a more humane and baseball relevant name is not the most fiscally responsible decision.
So the Matadors they remain.
They lost to the Confederacy in the ’07 finals.

Back in the 1860’s the Confederacy formed one of our nations most bothersome militias

The Matadors will be tough; they have lost big to the Black Sox and HURRICANES!
So have the Ducks.
A win tonight will put South Oakland at 4-3 before the calvary arrives and the Ducks roster takes shape.

Captain’s on the hill tonight.

Ducks continue to migrate to South Oakland.

Game 5&6 Recap: Suck My Balls Heckman or Where Have You Gone Doug Ryba?5

Uncategorized

I got to the field at 10:45 and chain smoked for an hour while i fielded text messages and tried to piece together a lineup  without our starting second baseman, who was trapped outside his car by a scorned acquaintance, and our backup second baseman who wouldn’t arrive till game two.

It was cold and wet and windy. Duck weather.

Bag it, Tag it.

The Ducks player of the game(s) was Mike Cinefra, who pitched a complete game victory in game one,  reached base in each of his at-bats from the leadoff spot over the double header and hit a sweet triple in game 2.  I’m pretty sure Heckman beaned him on purpose after he bunted for a base hit and reached safely on an infield single.  Mike stole three bases and scored all four times he reached base in game 1.

South Oakland had scored eleven runs in four games going into the double header and plated fourteen in the two game sweep.
The Warriors’ Malone hits well to all fields, we had no idea how to pitch to him. Overbaugh hit a 3-run homerun for Emsworth.

Craig Boley is a beast.

Game 1:

Cinefra was on the hill and retired the side in order to open the contest.
Then he hit a lead-off double in the bottom of the inning. Gwin bunted Cinefra to third and Jesse Smith singled him in.

1-0 Ducks.

The Warriors scored two in the top of the second. 2-1 Homos.

South Oakland took the lead in the third.

Baconator played second in game 1; he and Castle turned two double plays.

the two double plays were not turned in the same inning

Depo and Kolaja both recorded infield singles.

Kolaja put down a great sac bunt, to move pinch runner Murphy into scoring position.

Cinefra was beaned, Gwin walked.

The Ducks then pulled off a delayed double steal when Gwin drew a throw to first allowing Cinefra to take third.

Castle hit a 2-run single.

3-2 Ducks after three.

Wojton walked twice: Solid OBP.

The Warriors threatened in the 5th, after an error and a couple walks. Murphy doubled off some guy at second on a fly ball to left to end the threat.

Ultimate Warrior, Craig Boley was not his usual intense self. As if he has a one year old child to raise now or something.

Baumgartel singled in two runs in the bottom of the fifth, and Gwin doubled in two more in the sixth. While the Warriors scored two more runs i can’t account for. Malone hit a foul ball over the street in right.

7-4 Ducks after six. Cinefra closed the door with a K, a single and a game ending double play.

Game. Ducks

Game 2:

Reinforcements arrived in the form of Mike Duffy and Kenny Cool. Bacon took the hill. Rob didn’t have his best stuff but he battled and earned a tough win.

Questionable obstruction call on 5-4-3 double play ball Lesher killed Kenny, the ump said he didn’t slide into the base Boley was called out at first.

So it goes.

The Ducks led 7-2 after five innings. The Warriors came back to make it interesting in the 6th before Jesse Smith closed the door with his first save of the season.

I forget how we scored in the second game. Duffy and Cinefra were on base all day. Mike C. hit a triple, I had an RBI single. Jesse and Tony also drove in runs.

It’s possible some of the happenings i attribute to game 1 were in fact from this game.

I was in a redbull and copenhagen induced fog.

Everyone hit well.

We managed to sweep the double header with three of our best pitchers out of town.

Rob Baumgartel raised his record to 2-0.

We stole many bases and played smart baseball.

With a win against the Matadors Monday night, we can get above .500 for the first time this season.

The Ducks welcome Tim Lipp, infielder from Gannon University, who will make his South Oakland debut against the Matadors.

Fago (pronounced Faye-GO) might make it down on Monday.

Saturday’s game against the Bulldogs should mark the arrival of DeFilippo and Cool.

Sir Duckington,

Please remove your tinfoil hat. No conspiracy here. At draft time the Hebrew Oilers had a team full of new people who were untested. So, I asked, not begged, to be put in A because I had no clue how we would do.
Dan Ruef and several other guys came on after the draft. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good (see awful Oiler performance against Eagles).
Also confirming no fights vs. the Canes. Just bad umping.

My bad, guys.
No harm no fowl.

As of now the Warriors Ducks games will proceed as scheduled.

Ducks vs. Warriors

Before we get to the upcoming Ducks Warriors contest, some thoughts on the current state of NABA affairs.
Joe, put Playmaker on the Oilers.

The Oilers have a witty, if not pretentious mysite news section which I find entertaining.
Big Oil has defeated the Bulldogs, no-hit the Warriors, and recently topped THE HURRICANES!!! 8-1.
Rumor has it there was a fight or something during or after the game.
I get my info from the Bulldogs blog.
Always solid.

these two are sandbagging

Interesting a team capable of such feats would beg to be in the 18A division.
Begged for it.
Big Oil manager Reggie was pleasent in our conversation to reschedule, and it is possible that they just added some guys after that decision was made, but my tinfoil hat tells me its a conspiracy.

A plot to gain a bye and better position themselves for an attempt to dominate an unsuspecting AA team in the end of year tourney. Plus they probably want the lame, smaller trophy awarded to the A champion.
Whatever.
It’s fishy.
Speaking of fishy, the Warriors are one of the Ducks oldest rivals they’re like the Black Sox, except they don’t have any outstanding warrants and are allowed to leave the state without visiting a parole officer.

The Warriors always seem to be around the top of the other conference. And it’s a shame we don’t play them more often.
And by shame I mean, it’s too bad Heckman is such a dick.
They are also the first team to get into a fight with THE HURRICANES!!!
Which lead to the first half of the Fightin’ Rafalskis moniker.

segue to…

Pittsburghgh NABA History

The Warriors were once called the Piranhas. The battles waged between the teal wearing fish and the Ducks out in Ambridge were epic. (They wore Miami Dolphin teal – it was terrible)
On the way to Ambridge we would pass the Ohio River Blvd. Field and wish we could play there instead of the rock hard, gravel covered, Pony League sized band-box ten miles down the road in smack-infested nowhereville.

Now the Ohio River Blvd. Field is a pain in the ass – it’s never mowed and the dugouts are too small, there is nowhere to warm up; there’s an on-deck phone booth you have to try and swing in.
At least we’re not playing in Ambridge.
I don’t know anything about the Warriors current squad except they probably will find two more top-tier pitchers by the time the playoffs roll around and hopefully knock out the joke Big Oil.

Kelly Leak is 1-0

Bad News for the Warriors.

Game [5] Recap: Baconated. Ducks 6, Maulers 2

pittsburgh NABA, South Oakland Ducks Baseball

South Oakland has underachieved so far this season. We still don’t have a victory vs. a team above .500 on which to hang our hats. (new hats will be in for the double header saturday)

However, the 6-2 victory over the Maulers saw Rob “The Baconator” Baumgartel  find the zone and regain his command.

The Ducks also quacked out ten hits, almost tripling our season total.

We still have 20 games left. Monday’s win is something to build off of.

We will peak at the right time.

Our team is built for the long haul.

It’s a lot better to be 1-3 than 0-4.

Baumgartel retired the Maulers in order to open the game.

The Ducks picked up where they left off in the bottom half, leaving the bases loaded with no out, and the heart of the order up.

The Maulers opened the 2nd with a single, after a flyout to left,

Captain America started a 5-4-3 play to end the inning.

The Ducks went down in order in the bottom of 2, and Rob worked out of a jam in the 3rd. Then Castle and Captain doubled around a Duffy strikeout and South Oakland took the lead. 1-0

The Maulers stranded a runner on third in the 4th after a passed ball and a wild pitch

It's only a matter of time till we get a Major League Prequel.

Then, South Oakland scored five runs in the bottom of the 4th to put the game out of reach.

Kirk took one for the team. After Gwin popped out, Murphy drove a single to right.

And a Robocop prequel

Dr. Jones legged out an infield single

Baumgartel singled in Gibson.

The Ducks led 2-1 with two out and the bases loaded when Castle and Duffy hit back to back doubles to clear the bases.

6-0 Ducks after 4

Nothing else really happened till the top of the seventh.

TC Jones allowed two hits and a walk, Gwin threw out a runner at third, then overthrew Depot at first after Jones K’d a kid on a slider in the dirt.

The Maulers scored two runs to make it 6-2.

Jones struckout the next batter.

Game. Ducks.
