Game nineteen recap: Goodbye Green Monday – Ducks 19, Bulldogs 6.

Bulldogs, pittsburgh NABA, Recap

Listen:

The South Oakland Ducks and the Pittsburgh Bulldogs are two good amateur baseball teams. Both teams are part of the Pittsburgh NABA. I play on the Ducks. Many of my friends play on the Bulldogs.  When I don’t play for the Ducks, I play on the Bulldogs in a different league for old men.  That league is run by a douche bag and another guy who latently cheats to improve his team at the expense of others— I call that a conflict of interest.

A douche bag looks like this:

The Bulldogs drink quite a bit.  When I drink my brain turns into a coffin filled with green and yellow balloon animals, so I quit. Joe is a Bulldog. Joe runs the Pittsburgh NABA without conflict of interest; he recapped the last Ducks Bulldogs game because the Bulldogs won. Joe accidentally hit himself in the ankle with a foul ball in Monday’s game against the Ducks. In that game, the Ducks beat the Bulldogs 19-6.  Because the Ducks won, I am writing this recap to be posted on the Bulldogs site.

Normally, when I write blogs, they look like this:

The Rebels is a stupid name for a team

{pic of stupid rebel team altered with computer software.}

Sort-of-funny caption.

Now some mildly clever nicknames…

And so on…

Quack.

Because this recap is also for the Bulldogs site, I am poorly imitating an author I admire.

Listen:

The first place Ducks have won ten straight games, and are playing well enough to win the division.  The team is carving a niche as a talented, but hard working, blue collar team which is exactly what the Ducks manager hoped would happen. The Bulldogs are also in first place in their division and have a similar reputation.  I call these divisions Campbell and Wales because I like hockey.

In the first inning of the game against the Bulldogs, Ducks ace James Tessyier, allowed a run. This doesn’t happen often.  Going into the game, James had only allowed three runs in 25+ innings. That’s why he’s our ace.

An Ace looks like this:

In the bottom half of the first inning, The Ducks scored three runs when Jams Fago hit a home run.

This is what happens when I remember the home run backwards:  James moonwalks out of the dugout and high fives everyone, then jogs backwards around the bases, uses the force to pick up his bat and waits for the bushes in center field to spit the ball back at him before he slingshots it into the Bulldogs pitcher’s hand.  The Bulldogs pitcher was Brian Strom. He is my friend and a good pitcher and baseball player. He is not, however, the Bulldogs ace.  Later in the first, Ducks short stop Anthony DeFilippo hit a ball to the fence in left and was thrown out at second base. So it goes.

3-1 Ducks after 1.

The Bulldogs scored two more runs in the second to tie the game at three runs apiece going into the bottom half of the inning. Then the Ducks scored two more runs when Captain America hit a double. Captain America is Mark Guthrie’s somewhat clever nickname.

Captain America’s shield looks like this:

Guthrie  only hits doubles. Gwin lined out to the short stop. So it goes.  Cinefra reached on an error, and stole second. Captain America scored when Tim Lipp hit a sac fly.  Then Rob Cool hit a double that was nearly a home run. He wanted to hit a home run real bad because he and James Fago are in love and both want very badly to be the best player on the Ducks. This competition makes the Ducks better.

Ducks 5-3 after 2.

The Bulldogs made three straight outs in the third inning with the help of a nice double play. The Bulldogs catcher is from Youngstown  or some other decaying mill town. He hit into the nice double play and did not have any hits in the game.

The kids in Youngstown look like this:

Mike Tyson also lives near Youngstown. The inside of Mike Tyson’s brain looks like this:

In the bottom of the third, the Ducks scored four runs.

Chris Wojton recorded his fifth  hit in his last six at bats, then he stole second.  At some point in the game, the Bulldogs catcher had derogatory things to say about the caliber of play of the baseball team at Waynesburg University and our shortstop Anthony Defillipo and by proxy several Ducks who also play baseball at Waynesburg University. After Wojton stole second, he advanced to third on a passed ball. A passed ball is when the catcher misses the pitch and hurts his team. With one out, Guthrie walked, and the Ducks executed a hit and run. Wojton scored.

When Wojton makes good plays I use this picture:

Gwin stole second base. Guthrie scored on Cinefra’s single and Gwin went to third.

If Gwin had been thrown out at second he would not have scored on Tim Lipp’s single to the right side.

Tim Lipp plays college baseball at Gannon, and is willing to play out of position to help the Ducks win more games. Tim Lipp was thrown out at second, so it goes. Mike Cinefra scored from third on the throw.

9-3 after three.

In the top of the fourth, Rob Cool threw out a guy at home trying to score on a fly out to center.

In the fourth inning, the Ducks scored ten runs. These Ducks had hits in that inning:

Jesse Smith, Anthony Defilippo, Chris Wojton Nick Homa, KT Murphy, James Fago, Baconator, and Ken Cool.

TC Jones had an RBI.

Rick Whalen was hit in the back. Everyone laughed. Rick is OK.

Ken Cool is our assistant coach. He was hit in the back while coaching third earlier in the game. We all laughed. Ken is OK too.

19-3 after 4

In the fifth inning the Bulldogs showed why they are a good team. They did not quit. Vinny Gala is a good hitter and we could not get him out. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the last inning but still lost by 13 runs. So it goes.

RIPKVJr.

The Ducks play a double header Saturday Morning at 8am against the Militia at Gateway Middle School in Monroeville.

Quack.

Ducks Win.

Ducks win, pittsburgh NABA

Ducks 19, Bulldogs 6.

South Oakland hit well.

The game was closer than the score indicated, the Bulldogs (14-4) only trailed 5-3 going into the bottom of the third before South Oakland (14-5) scored the next 14 runs of the game.

The win brings the Ducks all-time record to 80-80-2

Game 19:

South Oakland Ducks of the North Side(13-5)

vs.

Pittsburgh Bulldogs (14-3)

9pm

Spring View Field

Aside from RBI (9 for 28+ Dogs, to 4 for Ducks) I have better numbers for the Ducks than the over 28 Bulldogs in six more plate appearances. I don’t know what that means, you’d think with the tougher pitching, etc..So it goes.

Don’t forget to change your signs for the game tonight, BJ.

…and bring me my duck, you sons of bitches.

The Bulldogs lost to the Militia Saturday, I can’t imagine they put out the same lineup that beat the HURRICANES! the week before.

I’ve got inside info on the Bulldogs new fight song.

kind of depressing, but you can’t argue with a winner.

A South Oakland victory will put our franchise at 80-80-2 all time.

It would also be our ninth straight on-field W, as the Titans win was a forfeit.

the Ducks’ #9 is retired worn by Rob Swanger who, in three seasons, never played on a winning Ducks team.

Let’s get back to .500, and keep rolling into the battle of Monroeville this weekend.

A win also gets us recap rights on the Bulldogs site. Their blog actually gets read, so that’s huge.

pittsburgh NABA, Recap, South Oakland Ducks Baseball

The Ducks (13-5, 4-1) victory over the Matadors (8-8, ?), coupled with the forfeit win over the Titans, improved South Oakland’s all time record to 79-80-2.

A win over the Bulldogs Monday night will bring the club’s record back to .500 for the first time since 2004 when the Ducks record stood at at 7-7 after their first 14 games.

The 2010 Ducks have won nine straight since starting the season 4-5.

***

Captain America and The Baconator combined to scatter nine hits over six innings vs. the Matadors, allowing a combined 2 earned runs.

pregame quacking was solid, clearly setting the tone. Whalen gets the troops fired up:

With the game tied 1-1 after 1 inning, the Ducks scored 10 runs with 2 outs in the top of the second.

With the bases loaded, Gwin drove in two with a blistering shot between second and third that the SS oléd to save his own life, Duffy walked to reload the bases, then Tim Lipp cleared the bases with a triple.

Wojton finished the day with a solid 3-4, 2b, 3rbi, 3r line.

Baconator doubled to drive in Wojton to finished the quacking in the 10-run second.

the ‘dors added three runs in the third.

11-3 after three.

their 3rd baseman proceeded to make seven errors in the fourth.

The Ducks added three runs in the fourth with help from the afforementioned errors:

Lipp reached on an error, Cool elbow dropped a single to left, a run scored on WOjton’s shot to third that was thrown away, Guthrie advanced to first after he swung at a passed ball on purpose to advance to first, then Whalen drove in a run with an infield single to third base.

Note: The Militia took the bulldogs out to the farm this morning, 14-3.

Seems like a classic let down after beating the Canes game. The Bulldogs will be looking to rebound Monday.

The Militia will be fighting for their season on the 10th.

Etna Matadors (9-8)

6:15pm

Etna Field

The Ducks beat the Matadors 4-3 in extra innings, when Ken Cool drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 8th.

the last time we were supposed to play the ‘Dors, God tried to wipe Etna off the face of the earth with repeated dispersion of lightning  bolts and torrential rain, leading to a cancellation and subsequent rescheduling for today.

All of the sudden we have a shit load of games in the next two weeks.

Let’s make it eight straight W’s.

Schedule Change for your first place South Oakland Ducks…and Late Season Power Rankings

Bulldogs, pittsburgh NABA, South Oakland Ducks Baseball

South Oakland will play a makeup game vs. the Matadors Friday at 6:15 at the Inverted Field in beautiful Etna.

The Matadors have been inconsistent this season.

We’re trying to get a game scheduled for Monday, July 5th

Recap of Bulldogs Fightin’s game from last week.

The Hurricanes only losses have come in the division, bummer for them.

The Bulldogs can clinch the Campbell Conference with a win over the Canes, or a win over the Warriors and another Canes division loss.

The Comment section has been mud.  Here are the power rankings as of July 1st.

  1. Bulldogs (14-2)
  2. Hurricanes (13-3)
  3. Ducks (11-5)
  4. Black Sox (9-5)
  5. Matadors (8-7)
  6. Militia (10-6)
  7. Big Oil  (crazy!)
  8. Warriors (5-9)
  9. Maulers ( 8-9)
  10. Eagles (4-12)
  11. Knights
  12. Titans

Notthing to controversial there actually, but whatever. The Warriors are struggling which surprises me. Now way should the OIlers be playing down.  The Ducks blog likes the Maulers to come out of A.  The Bulldogs have the inside track to hold off the defending champs out west.

South Oakland still has four division games remaining against the Militia (2) Sox, and Eagles. One Ducks win over the militia, and one over the Black Sox will clinch  the division.   The score from last nights Sox Eagles game has not been posted.

Game Sixteen Recap: Pronounced, “James Tisher”

Recap

The first place South Oakland Ducks (11-5, 4-1) evened the season series with their uninspired-uniform wearing, long time, hated, geographic, Capulet-vs.- Montague-esue rival, Brookline Black Sox (9-5, 4-1). James Tessier’s complete game shutout, clutch hitting by Tim Lipp and Jesse Smith, and duck-tastic defensive play rounded out an inspired effort by the flock that kept the Black Sox off the score sheet, and prevent the gang of hooligans from clinching the Wales Conference.

Neither team made and error both Chalfin and Tessyier gave their teams a chance to win.

I think a couple of the Black Sox players missed the game for violating parole.

Either way, the Ducks would not be denied.

The Ducks need to split their double header with the Militia on the 10th to set up a casket match with the Black Sox for the Wales title.

Tessyier surpassed his season high for pitches in one inning when proud father, Ron Florian battled his way to a ten pitch at bat before lining out to Rob Cool.

Congrats, Ron. Welcome to parenthood.

Shane Doan rounded out, and GoldDust K’d to end the inning.

Arguably the two best center fielders in the Pittsburgh NABA battle it out for the intercontinental title.

Defilippo broke up Chalfin’s bid for a no-hitter three batters into the bottom of the first with a Ken Cool-esque line-drive to left.

0-0 after one.

We can't both wear our sleevless shirts. I told you to call before we went out!

After Kenny Rayl hit a rocket shot to third for an infield single, Klayko grounded into a routine double play up the middle. Defilippo  dove for a grounder behind second, flipped it to Casale who got Klako at first.

That play set the tone for the game.

Slavonick flew out to left to end the inning.

In the bottom of the second, Gwin singled with two outs and was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a Casale double to right.

0-0 after two.

Tessyier retired the side in order in the third, including the first of two pop outs by the Sox catcher. Who was 0-3 throwing out runers on the day, but gave us a nice How to Block the Plate Pose later in the game.

Scioscia has a gun.

In the bottom of the third, the Ducks took a 1-0 lead when Cool worked a 2-out walk, stole second, and was singled in by Tim Lipp.

Lipp also had a Brooks Robinsonian day at third, throwing out a couple guys from foul territory, and making a nice play on a bunt attempt.

1-0 Ducks after 3.

Tessyier worked out of a jam in the 4th. GoldDust and Kenny Powers hit back to back, two out singles, then Klayko popped out with runners on first and third.

The Ducks went down in order in the 4th.

The Black Sox would only have one runner reach second the rest of the game.

South Oakland added an insurance run in the 6th, when Lipp singled, stole second and third, and scored on Jesse Smith’s two-out single.

Tessyier retired the side in order in the 7th.

Game. Ducks.

Now the playoff picture could get muddy. The Eagles (4-11, 0-5) are eliminated from title contention.

Don Henley wrote a song about it:

They could dance their way into the role of spoiler. If that lefty throws a good game, they could steal one. Joe Walsh is fired up for the rematch with the Black Sox Wednesday.

No over looking the Militia, despite beating them by ten runs last game. Strange things can happen in 8am double headers, and you know the Militia will be amped up on home made crank and ready for the South Oakland offensive on the 10th.

South Oakland (11-5, 4-1) sits in first place in the Wales Conference.

The Ducks seventh straight win prevented Brookline (9-5, 4-2) from effectively clinching the division, setting up a show down for the division for the division title with the Black Sox: time and place tbd.

James Tessyier (4-0) pitched a complete game shutout.

Tim Lipp and Jesse Smith had rbi for South Oakland.

Ken Cool, once again, dominated.
